Mrs. Beecher & Mark Twain

A short biographical monologue and portrayal by Jenny Monroe

Julia Jones Beecher (1826 - 1905) was the wife of the Rev. Thomas K. Beecher of Elmira’s Park Church. She and Thomas were devoted friends of the Langdon family and were among the celebrants at the wedding of Samuel Clemens and Olivia Langdon in

1870.

Mrs. Beecher and Mark Twain is a presentation Monroe created for Close to Clemens, a collection of remembrances by local friends of Mark Twain presented at the church in 2017.

Mrs. Beecher (as Twain always referred to her) had been Olivia’s Sunday school teacher and became a special friend to the author during the summers he spent in Elmira. Following her portrayal of Julia, Monroe will challenge the audience with some trivial pursuits regarding the Langdon- Beecher-Clemens legacy in Elmira.
